How I Got the Name "Def Dave"

I have now had the nickname Def Dave for more than half my life. I've had several people ask me recently how I got the name. So I figured that might make a good blog entry.

According to legend...
I would often arrive at my high school before the bell rang for homeroom. I would spend this time at the beginning of the day freestlyin' with the bruthas.

We'd form a huge circle with everyone providing the beat with stomps and claps, then we'd take turns stepping into the middle and just freestyle rap. One morning I busted a rhyme so fresh that DJ Zeus of the Holly Hills Crew declared me a b-boy and announced that henceforth I shall be known as "Def Dave".

This is, as I said, according to legend.

The truth?

Well, one day I was out bowling with a couple of white friends. We were all coming up with funny names to enter into the scorekeeping computer. I put in Def Dave and the name has followed me around ever since. That was the summer of 1987, just prior to my junior year of high school. By the time I graduated I found myself answering to the name at school, with some people never calling me by my real name. Half the signings in my senior yearbook are addressed to Def Dave.

Rap names seem to catch on with my class. So let me give a shout out to the HHS Posse, Class of 1989. If they see this, they'll know who they are:

Cool Kid Chris
Clayboy E (or A.O. Clay)
Chef
Rut
Badge
Gold D Rocks
and The Boyd Wonder.
